The Chemistry of Dye Sublimation

Screen printing and direct-to-garment (DTG) printing deposit a layer of plastisol or water-based ink on top of fabric fibers. Over time, friction from movement and temperature cycles from washing cause the ink to crack, flake, and peel.

Dye sublimation, by contrast, uses heat-activated gaseous dyes that bond directly with polymer chains inside the polyester fiber. The pigment becomes part of the yarn itself. It will never crack, peel, or wash out.
